Assessment & Diagnosis

We offer a range of assessments to evaluate children’s learning, behavioural, social and emotional needs. Our assessments help identify the young person's strengths and needs, and provide a comprehensive report with tailored strategies for home and school. â€‹â€‹

Not all assessments are administered for diagnosis purposes. Assessments are a great tool to provide insight into your child's learning capabilities, strengths and weaknesses, and support them to reach their potential and help with school planning. If this is a concern you may have, please contact us to discuss the assessment that would best suit your needs. Please note, we do not conduct mental health or psychological assessments for medico-legal purposes. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

Cognitive Assessment - $1090

A cognitive assessment, also known as an IQ test or psychometric assessment, helps to identify a child’s strengths and weaknesses in several cognitive skill areas including verbal comprehension, visuospatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed. This assessment also allows us to determine if there is a cognitive delay, or alternatively can assess for giftedness.

Cognitive assessments we use:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V)

  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS- IV)

Academic Assessment - $1210

An academic assessment measures how a child is performing in a range of academic skill areas compared to their peers and age expectations. This assessment allows us to identify a child’s abilities in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics and written expression, and helps inform educational decisions and need for interventions.

Academic assessment we use:

  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)

ADHD Assessment - $1530*

This is a comprehensive assessment to determine whether your child meets diagnostic criteria for ADHD as outlined in the DSM-5-TR. It aims to evaluate challenging behaviour in children and adolescents, particularly in the areas of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, and rule out differential diagnoses to reduce the possibility of misdiagnosis. It involves interviews, review of school reports, a cognitive assessment, and feedback from parents and teachers who regularly interact with your child. Please note, following completion of our assessments, if criteria for ADHD is met, you will need to see a Paediatrician to confirm the diagnosis.

Assessments we use:

  • Cognitive Assessment*

  • Conners Parent and Teacher Ratings

*Please note, if your child has had a cognitive assessment completed within the past 2 years elsewhere, the cost of the ADHD assessment will be $1085

Intellectual Developmental Disorder (Intellectual Disability) Assessment - $1305-$1520*

This assessment is commonly requested by schools or NDIS to determine if a child meets DSM-5-TR criteria for an Intellectual Developmental Disorder diagnosis. This assessment aims to identify the young person's current level of cognitive and adaptive functioning, and provide information and recommendations to assist with funding applications, special provisions and school support.

Assessments we use:

  • Cognitive Assessment*

  • Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale (Vineland-3) or Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (ABAS-3)

*Please note, if your child has had a cognitive assessment completed within the past 2 years elsewhere, the cost of this assessment will be reduced.

Specific Learning Disorder Assessment (Dyslexia, Dyscalculia) - $1760

This comprehensive assessment evaluates a child’s strengths and weaknesses across all cognitive and academic areas to understand their academic performance, and identify if a Specific Learning Disorder is present.

Please note, to undertake this assessment, it is a prerequisite that your child has received targeted intervention for their reading difficulties (if assessing for Dyslexia) or maths difficulties (if assessing for Dyscalculia), such as an in-school literacy/numeracy program or out-of-school tutoring, and that their difficulties have been present for at least six months.

Assessments we use:

  • Cognitive Assessment

  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)

Behavioural Assessment - $665

A behavioural assessment helps to identify the behavioural and emotional difficulties a child may be exhibiting that may be impairing their functioning in the areas of learning, family life and peer interactions. This assessment aids in determining if the child or adolescent is presenting with challenging behaviours that are not age-appropriate, and whether that young person meets DSM-5-TR criteria for an Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD) diagnosis.

Behavioural assessments we use:

  • Conners Parent and Teacher Ratings

  • Behaviour Assessment System for Children (BASC-3)

Assessment Process

The assessment process involves:

  1. A 50 minute initial consultation to discuss your current concerns and gather relevant background information. During this appointment, we will decide which assessment (if any!) is best and explain what you and your child can expect, and how to prepare for the upcoming assessment(s).

  2. Contact school teacher and/or Learning & Support Team staff to gather relevant information and concerns (if necessary).

  3. Assessment(s) administration. Cognitive and Academic assessments are usually booked in 2-hour blocks and scheduled in the morning. These assessments are completed with only your child and the Psychologist in the room, to minimise distractions, however exceptions are sometimes made (this will be discussed in the initial consultation).

  4. Assessments are scored and interpreted, and a comprehensive report with tailored recommendations is prepared.

  5. A final feedback session 3 weeks following the completion of the final assessment. During this session, the results and recommendations are explained and parents are given an opportunity to ask any questions they may have.
